Misspell is a fast-paced spelling mini game where magic depends on perfect incantations. Play as a witch apprentice brewing potions for desperate townsfolk, spelling words under pressure to keep your reputation, and your life, intact. Make too many mistakes, and an angry mob will come knocking.

Game Concept

A fast-paced 2D spelling-based mini game where players brew magical potions by spelling words correctly. Set during the witch trials, the player must maintain spelling accuracy to satisfy clients and avoid drawing suspicion from an angry mob.

Gameplay Overview

The game is structured into rounds (shifts). Each round, three customers enter the shop requesting specific potions. To brew a potion, the player must correctly spell five words related to that potion under a time limit.

Words are presented in a spelling bee format (“Your word is…”), and players can ask for a repeat or the word’s origin, pausing the timer. As the player types, the potion visually reacts in real time, changing color.

Perfect spelling results in a successful potion and positive customer effects.

Minor mistakes produce flawed potions with unintended effects.

Major mistakes cause a strike and upset clients.

At the end of each round, a Shift Summary displays accuracy, outcomes, and warnings. If accuracy is too low, the player earns a strike. After three low-accuracy rounds, the player is “fired” and sent to the Salem witch trials, resulting in a game over.

Myth & Narrative Background

Drawing on European mythology and the Salem witch trials, the game is built on the myth of witches and witchcraft. Magic in these mythologies depends on precise written words, incantations, and spells. Any error might result in a spell failing or backfiring.

The player is an apprentice witch working for a strong Head Witch. According to the Head Witch, previous witches were accused because they were poor spell spellers instead of because they were bad. The player's job is to accurately spell magical phrases in order to create potions for the locals. Poor accuracy leads to failed magic, suspicious townspeople, and eventually a mob at the door.
